SalukiLAN 2009: A note of special thanks

by Sarah
05 10 2009

Thanks to all who came and helped out at SalukiLan 2009! Because of you, we managed to pull in ~120 students at one point (96 IP addresses were active!), plus helped to foster interest in technology among students.

We were mentioned in the Daily Egyptian! (http://www.siude.com/news/technology-group-holds-first-public-event-1.1937719)

We were mentioned in CPU Magazine! (http://www.computerpoweruser.com/LanYard/calendar.aspx?events=past&guid=dc6f60d7e30a42dea4e26ec94e09b009)

Special thanks to the following people (in no particular order):

  • Kevin Reuter, for manning the signin/out booths for an incredible amount of time
  • Steven Steffen, for helping resolve venue issues, and also for manning the signin/out booths
  • Adam Norton, for working his duty as Events Chair and helping to resolve conflicts and issues
  • Ben Edwards, for bringing to our attention problems and issues, and provided support to nearby LAN partiers
  • Robert Humiston, for providing tools to make extra power cables and systems, and fixing a girl’s laptop for ACM
  • Gi Vania, for donating his time at the last minute to keep SalukiLan up
  • Curt Wilson, for giving an awesome talk on security, and getting root on the Linux demo machine
  • Jacob Israel, who helped put up all the posters in the places we couldn’t reach, and for organizing the various tournaments
  • Andrew Hickey, who quietly provided help and setup where it was needed, staying for the entire time
  • Nick Chandler, who pointed out issues during initial set-up, and helped resolve them
  • Lindsay Dubois, who pointed out issues during initial set-up, and helped resolve them, also for being an additional female presence
  • Chris Weitzel, for manning the sign-in/out booths at the early hours on Sunday morning
  • Aaron Ragusa, for lending us his switches, and providing comic relief
  • Alan Owens, for providing pizza for those who looked after Logan

Special thanks also to the following groups of people:

  • All the people and console gamers who helped to babysit Logan Owens and keep a rated G environment steady
  • The gamers at the yellow table, who came early and helped with network and power set-up
  • All the students who ended up attending SalukiLan 2009
  • Housing technicians, for helping us resolve power consumption issues

Also thanks to the following officers whom came to help at various points of SalukiLan:

  • Chris Ensign, helping with overnight shifts
  • Jeff Cap, helping with the Linux booth and watching Curt Wilson gain root at 3AM
  • Justin Lee, helping with overnight shifts and general cleanup
  • Jay Meyer, helping with general management

Thanks to all our sponsors who provided us with stuff to give away:

  • Thermaltake
  • CPU Magazine
  • Patriot Memory
  • Alienware

Thanks to the following departments on SIUC campus:

  • Computer Science, for lending us 4 switches and 5 full computer systems, and providing a polo shirt to raffle off
  • Network Engineering, for lending us 2 switches and helping us with VLAN setup
  • RHA+Housing, for allowing us to hold the event in Grinnell Hall

Thanks to IEEE+SIUIS for aiding in advertising and promotion of SalukiLan 2009.

A final thanks to Benjamin Wasson, President of ACM for hosting registrations on his own server at http://www.salukilan.com, and for remaining dedicated and putting in so much of his time to make this event happen.

Bowling Night was a success!

by Sarah
11 09 2009

Thanks to everyone who came to Bowling Night last night. We had something like 20-25 people show up to take advantage of free bowling provided by ACM. Everyone had fun, and it was a blast.

Meetings will continue on Monday at 5PM in the Cambria room in the Student Center.

RSO Fair – afterthought

by Sarah
28 08 2009

ACM at the RSO fair turned out to be a huge success! Thanks to Steffen, Chris W, Adam, Jacob, Kevin, Ben, and Sarah for helping with the booth. Special thanks to all the students who came and attended the booth!

We got somewhere around 20-30 students interested in ACM and SalukiLan, from a variety of majors, ranging from CS/ECE/IST to Mechanical Engineering and Philosophy.

Many students expressed interest in SalukiLan; the preregistration system is in place and online at http://www.salukilan.com. The table system currently in place is not finalized, and is subject to change. This will not affect your preregistration in any way, but will affect where your reserved LAN Party seat is, so check back later to verify you are sitting where you want to be.

Other news: Thermaltake is onboard for SalukiLan, as is Alienware. SIUC ACM is also in the process of setting up a dedicated Listserv mailing list for members and officers; more details on that will be posted later in the week.

If you are a CS major and interested in learning more about ACM, please attend the CS Orientations on September 2 (undergrad) or September 3 (grad) at 4:30PM in the Business Incubator.

Otherwise, feel free to attend any of our meetings, which are held on Mondays @ 5PM in Morris Library 510A.
