Ben gave a general rundown of what ACM was about. Dr. Wainer was also present to elaborate more on the national ACM organization, as well as the opportunities available for students. Membership forms are available online here. RSO Dues are $5/year, while ACM Dues are $19/year. Students get various benefits including access to the digital libraries regarding news and research on computing, as well as access to various Microsoft software for educational purposes as part of the MSDNAA.
Most likely ACM will be migrating from the library to the student center for its weekly general meetings for the remainder of the semester. Meeting dates are unlikely to change, remaining at 5PM on Mondays.
Ben, Adam, and Sarah have been working continually in order to make SalukiLan a great event for October. Various sponsors have been contacted, and the following are now on board in support of the event: Cisco, Alienware, Thermaltake, Patriot, Attitude Designs. We are still in need of sponsors; if you are a business/company and wish to support SalukiLan, the SIUC LAN Party, please contact Ben, Adam, or Sarah.
We also would like members to come help and participate in the setting up of SalukiLan in general; we would like to encourage students to host booths on computer-related topics, whether it be research, industry, or entertainment-oriented.
Sarah put forth the proposal for the formation of various SIGs (Special Interest Groups) underneath the “umbrella” of ACM in order to foster discussion among students about various aspects of computing. If approved, students would be encouraged to host their own discussions and projects in one of the multitude of areas, whether it be CS, IST, or EE/CE-oriented. Potential SIGs include:
A full list of official ACM SIGs can be found here.
As next Monday is Labor Day, there will be no meeting, and no school. However, next Thursday (Sept 10) is ACM Bowling Night, so will count as an unofficial meeting. We need 30+ people to show up, as we have 6 lanes booked, so bring your friends! This will also give you a chance to meet and interact with current ACM members.
Currently I (Sarah) am in the midst of updating various aspects of the website in order to provide relevant information. For better updates and coverage, however, students are recommended to join the official SIUC ACM Listserv.
