i was wondering if anyone could help me debug my sound problem. some update a while ago caused it and i've been hoping for an update again to fix it but im not sure its comming. through help from ubuntufourms.org heres what i know

output of

~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

so i my sound card is recognized

also, when i change all of my sound options in system-> preferences-> sound from Pulse Audio to OSS i do get sound but it is very limited on what i can use (more or less only rythmbox) and could cope. but rather than limit my options i'd rather fix the issue

should i stay in Pulse Audio mode and use the volume control manager, i do get output from playback and it is unmuted however i only get a buzzing sound from the speakers where in oss i would have full sound

Do you know what specific updates you did?

Also, have you tried using just alsa to play back something, versus using PulseAudio to control the sound device?

What is your kernel version? This can be found using uname -a

What is your alsa-utils version? This can be found using alsamixer –version or aplay –version (that's supposed to be two dashes)

What it sounds like is alsa-utils may have been updated, but the kernel + modules were not. Alternatively, PulseAudio may have been updated.

~$ uname -a
Linux Compy 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 18 18:40:08 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

~$ aplay –version
aplay: version 1.0.18 by Jaroslav Kysela <perex@perex.cz>

~$ alsamixer –version
alsamixer: invalid option — '-'
AlsaMixer v1.0.18
Usage: alsamixer [-h] [-c <card: 0...7>] [-D <mixer device>] [-g] [-s] [-V <view>] [-a <abst>]

the changes to alsa do the same as leaving it as pulse audio. and i dont know specifically what they were, im in the habit of just automatically updating

Hmm.. while I don't have a lot of time right now to help solve this, you can try bringing your system in to SalukiLan and I can take a look at it then.

so i upgraded my lappys* Ubuntu after not doing so all summer, however i upgraded via the sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and i have no issues what so ever. and i know that i used the update manager for my compy* (to which now im no longer going to use the update monitor) so im very sure that it is the same issue that i had once in the past where one of my drivers (probably my pulse audio driver because my sound card works under the OSS) has been misplaced by the gui so is there a way to roll back? i know i can load old kernals but it the error was still there…

*i refer to all laptops as lappys and desktops as compys
